Unusual winter snowstorms in the Mainland have seriously disrupted road and rail transportation services across the country. In Guangdong, transportation services have ground to a halt as networks beyond the province have been forced to close due to the adverse weather. As a result, hundreds of thousands of migrant workers trying to travel to their hometowns for the Lunar New Year holiday are stranded at train stations. To help disperse the crowds and to reduce pressure on transport networks during the peak “spring rush” travel period, the Guangdong Government is urging enterprises in the region to allow their staff to remain at their factories. In light of the situation, the Chamber is urging Hong Kong enterprises operating in Guangdong to reopen their dormitories for staff who are unable to travel to their hometowns to celebrate the Lunar New Year with their families. Companies are also urged to provide workers with necessary assistance during the holiday period.
