Ref No 003/06 - Celebrating Our 145th Anniversary
24 February 2006
Dear Member, The citizens of Hong Kong are renowned and recognized internationally for their business skills, their knowledge of the market places in which they operate, their tenacity and their flexibility. Your Chamber plays its part in helping to ensure that we provide appropriate representation for you in which to operate successfully. Perhaps less well known to you is the Chamber's effort, through the Good Citizen Award Scheme, to recognise and encourage those Hong Kong citizens who have done their bit for the community. The Scheme is solely sponsored by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and jointly administered by the Chamber with the Hong Kong Police. This highly successful Scheme was set up by the Chamber and the Police as part of the Fight Crime Campaign in 1973. Each year, it awards Hong Kong citizens who directly assist the Police in maintaining law and order in Hong Kong. Often, the awardees will have taken personal risk to apprehend or track criminals and over the years, we have raised and awarded more than $6 million dollars to citizens who have helped bring criminals to justice. More details on the history of the Award and the list of past donors can be found in the enclosed booklet entitled "A Part of the Chamber's History." I hope you will find it interesting reading and feel proud to be associated with this legacy as a Member of the Chamber. However, the Award fund is nearly depleted and we are convinced that the Scheme remains relevant and should be continued. As a result of this, the Chamber is now appealing to Members to replenish the fund . We welcome donations, as we also welcome your participation in a special fund-raising dinner, at which you can sponsor or purchase tables, following this year's Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, April 25. Coincidentally, this is the Chamber's 145th Anniversary, and the dinner at the InterContinental Hotel in Kowloon will help us celebrate this momentous milestone. I urge you to spend a few minutes looking over the enclosed booklet to read for yourself the significance of this Award, and I hope you will support the Good Citizen Award either through donations, or by attending the AGM Dinner, or both, by filling in the reply form with your cheque. Thank you for ensuring that this worthy cause can continue to help Hong Kong remain a safe place for us to do business and for our families to feel safe and enjoy living in. I look forward to seeing you at the 145th Anniversary dinner on April 25. Yours Sincerely, David Eldon Chairman
