HKGCC: “Graduate Trainee Campaign 2009”
6 February 2009
A Voluntary Corporate Training & Work Scheme
The Chamber would like to call upon your support in the "
Graduate Trainee Campaign 2009
" by offering trainee placements to recent graduates in gaining valuable work experience during this challenging time. Developed by the Chamber's Manpower Committee, the campaign has been listed as a major pillar in the initiative announced by Chief Executive Donald Tsang, on 22 January 2009 to help graduate employment. We have been in touch with the Government on developing financial incentives to enhance participation in our campaign. Companies participating in this campaign will be able to receive the first mover benefits from any such scheme that may be developed. We hope that each of our member companies and friends can join hands together to work on this campaign to help our young graduates to sail through the storm.
Let me elaborate a bit more on the rationale for developing this campaign. Given the prevailing economic outlook, we anticipate that fresh graduates with little work experience will have difficulty in finding employment as many companies would have put their recruitment plans on hold. The objective of the campaign is to create genuine on-the-job training opportunities for fresh graduates in addition to the existing headcounts within companies. We hope that the period of training would be at least 12-months so that the traineeship will be meaningful to both employers and employees but at the same time perform an important community task of keeping our graduates gainfully engaged during the difficult times ahead. At the same time, the campaign would serve as a catalyst for companies that are in search of manpower reinforcement against a slowing economy. No fixed pay scale has been suggested as different companies and positions will have different pay scales.
As members and friends of the Chamber, I sincerely call for your participation in this meaningful campaign to contribute to the community's effort to deal with the financial tsunami. Our Chamber has launched the "One Company One Job" campaign in 2002 to help the community tie over the difficult economy at the time. In the period, we are launching this campaign as we appeal to you to help. If your company already has a graduate trainee scheme in place, this will be a good opportunity to let the community appreciate your contributions in nurturing the young generation.
